Hanchard joined the faculty of the Political Science Department last year as the inaugural Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor. A scholar of comparative politics specializing in nationalism, social movements, racial hierarchy, and citizenship, Hanchard taught previously at Northwestern University, where he was a professor of political science and African American studies and director of the school's Institute for Diasporic Studies. In the Krieger School, Hanchard co-directs the Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship Program with Erin Chung, the Charles D. Miller Professor of East Asian Studies. His books include Orpheus and Power: Afro-Brazilian Social Movements in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil, 1945-1988 (1994) and Party/Politics: Horizons in Black Political Thought (2006). Professor Hanchard holds a BA from Tufts University, an MA from the New School for Social Research, and a PhD from Princeton University.
