Larson, a professor of history, is a historian of Africa, with specializations in the social and cultural history of east and southern Africa, slavery and the slave trades, and the cultural history of empire. He is the author of History and Memory in the Age of Enslavement: Becoming Merina in Highland Madagascar, 1770-1822 (2000) and is currently at work on Island of Letters: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic in an African Kingdom. He joined the faculty in 1998, having earned a BA from the University of Minnesota and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
