It is no secret that the world at large, and the U.S. especially, is in the midst of an obesity crisis. Obesity itself is not a real disease in the classic or strictest sense of the word; it is no cholera, cancer, or AIDS. Then how can we possibly be in the midst of an “epidemic”? I plan to pursue this transition of obesity from a personal problem to a real medical issue as a history of public health in the United States. Legislation passed or left unpassed, and the language used therein, will prove to reveal much about the government’s understanding of obesity.
