Refugees in US and their Exposure to US Racial Conceptions
My research project will involve an ethnographic exploration of the experiences of refugees living in Baltimore or Washington, DC. Although these families share the status of “refugee” in the United States, they are divided by the racial identity placed upon them by the US culture. I want to understand how the black/white divide, which is such an integral part of US history and is at the heart of so many social issues today, affects the lives of refugees who were previously unaware of and/or unexposed to this black/white divide. I want to also discover how they cope with these experiences.
