The Johns Hopkins University
By U.S. standards, The Johns Hopkins University is “small” in terms of student size (5,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students) and faculty size (519 faculty). However, it is “large” in terms of its reputation, with one of the world’s leading medical schools, hospitals, and school of public health. Also, Johns Hopkins is, and always has been, a research-oriented university. It granted the first Ph.D. degrees awarded in the United States and has the largest research budget, by far, of any university in the nation. In 2009, this budget was $1.85 billion (http://gazette.jhu.edu/2010/10/04/johns-hopkins-first-in-rd-for-31st-year/).
