BA/MA Program With Sciences Po Paris
The five-year BA/MA program with the renowned French political science institute Sciences Po Paris provides a select group of undergraduate students a unique opportunity to pursue an accelerated dual-degree program between JHU and Sciences Po that will ultimately result in a master’s degree from one of the four schools of Sciences Po.
One of Europe’s most prestigious universities, Sciences Po has a strong international focus, and allows students to develop a cross-cultural and transatlantic perspective, while simultaneously offering unique access to the field of international affairs via the school’s extensive global network of international leaders, governments, NGOs, and corporations. A member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), Sciences Po prepares its graduates for careers ranging from international business to law to government while its research master’s program caters to students interested in academic or research-oriented careers.
The Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), which houses the majority of Sciences Po’s internationally oriented master’s programs, is entirely bilingual, and students may choose to pursue either an English or French track of study. Students may also elect to pursue a master’s degree at the School of Journalism, School of Communication, or School of Law. Students interested in an academic career may also choose to pursue a research master’s with the doctoral program at Sciences Po. Students who are not proficient in French will also pursue French language training during their course of study at Sciences Po.
Students apply to the BA/MA program during the second semester of their sophomore year. Selected students spend their junior year at Hopkins, choosing their courses so as to ideally complete their major requirements before beginning their studies at Sciences Po. During their senior year, students remain enrolled at Hopkins but study as Sciences Po master’s students. During their second year at Sciences Po, students are not enrolled at Hopkins anymore but continue working towards their master’s degree at Sciences Po.
The Sciences Po program includes a one-semester full-time internship of the students’ choosing, in place of academic coursework, at a French or international organization or business.
The BA/MA program with Sciences Po is open to international studies majors who have:
- Demonstrated strong academic performance
- Demonstrated interest in public or international affairs
- Demonstrated a high level of maturity and a clear intent to pursue an intensive master’s program abroad.
Additional study abroad is not permitted for students applying to Sciences Po, with the exception of a summer or Intersession program.
Students apply to the BA/MA program with Sciences Po during the second semester of their sophomore year.
Applications consist of:
- Statement of interest indicating motivations for wishing to pursue the BA/MA program, international experience, and career interests. The statement of interest must be in French if the applicant wishes to pursue a French track. There is no specific page or word limit for the statement of interest. However, students should be as concise as possible.
The annual deadline for applications occurs in early February; a date for this year’s competition has not yet been selected. Applications will be reviewed by an internal selection committee at Homewood.
Interviews for selected applicants will take place one to two weeks after the application deadline (date TBD). Notifications of preliminary acceptance will be sent shortly thereafter. Selected students will complete a supplementary application to Sciences Po during their junior year for final approval.
