Ryan Calder is assistant professor of sociology and Islamic studies. His current research focuses on the $2 trillion Islamic finance industry: where it came from, including its roots in injunctions against usury common to the three Abrahamic faiths; how it emerged at the intersection of Islamic modernism, anti-colonial liberation movements, and the oil shocks of the 1970s; and how it expresses and constructs piety in the 21st century through the structuring of complex shariah-compliant securities and derivatives. He also conducted interviews in Bahrain and Libya during the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.
