Alumni to Watch: Spring 2018

Monica Hess ’09 (MA, writing) had her recent book, American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land, named a New York Times Notable Book of 2017. The nonfiction book tracks a series of arsons in rural Virginia and the surprising events that led to them.


Jae Jin ’08 (public health) received a 2017 Creator Award from the WeWork organization given to those who “bring new ideas into the world.” Recognized for his burgeoning music career, he has made two award-winning albums, and his music has been featured in numerous television dramas.


Pilar Ortega ’02 (philosophy) was named to Crain’s 2017 40 Under 40 list. She was recognized for founding the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement, dedicated to building ties between Chicago’s Latino physicians and health care providers in training.
