New Grant Awarded to Study Neural Representation of Space

MBI Researcher James Knierim, in collaboration with Noah Cowan of the JHU Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded a new, 5-year grant from NIH.  The project, entitled “A Control Theoretic Approach to Addressing Hippocampal Function,” will use engineering analyses and principles to investigate how neurons in the hippocampus and related structures construct mental maps of an organism’s environment by integrating the animal’s movement through space.  This work was seeded by a 2015 Discovery Award to Cowan and Knierim by the JHU Provost’s Office.
