Alumni Stories: Beth Simmonds

Major: Sociology, Minor in Classics
Current Position:
Development Associate at the National Postal Museum

As the Development Associate at the National Postal Museum, Beth manages their membership program, deals with gifts, and oversees the plans and logistics for all special events that take place at the Museum. She started the position right after graduation, having worked part-time in the Museum's Office for External Affairs during her last semester at Johns Hopkins.

Beth was a sociology major, and double minor in Classics and Museums and Society at Hopkins. On relationship between her fields of study, Beth writes "I found the combination of museum studies and sociology to be unique but totally compatible; I was constantly drawing connections from social structures and social inequalities to museum controversies and culture wars....I loved the opportunity to visit museums and learn new tools or my M&S projects...taking advantage of the DMC and gaining a skill set in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. My resume looks a lot better as a result."

She details further the opportunities she encountered as a student in the Program for Museums and Society in her blog entry for Johns Hopkins admitted students. Check out what she has to say about her current job and how Museums and Society helped influence her decision to enter the museum field.
