Climate Change and Mental Health Interventions Workshop

May 2, 2023 at 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm

People around the world are experiencing the physical and mental health effects of the climate crisis. To meet this growing need, equitable, community-level public health interventions are needed to build resilience and strengthen mental health and wellness.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, join APHA’s Center for Climate, Health and Equity for an interactive workshop on how to design mental health interventions with a public health approach, focusing on how to engage and prioritize vulnerable populations.

Attendees will learn about:

  • The mental health effects of climate change and ways that both individuals and health professionals can take action.
  • The importance of centering and taking the lead from communities on the front lines of the intersecting climate and mental health crises.
  • Tips that help incorporate equity into mental health interventions based on the Climate and Health Playbook: Adaptation Planning for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Speakers include:

  • Evelyn Maldonado, program associate, Center for Climate, Health and Equity, APHA
  • Aditi Samavedy, intern, Center for Climate, Health and Equity, APHA
  • Shelbi Davis, MPH, PMP, senior analyst, climate change, ASTHO
  • Benjamin Fulgencio-Turner, MPP, director, ecoAmerica
  • Bob Doppelt, coordinator, International Transformational Resilience Coalition

This workshop will be partially based on recommendations from APHA and CDC’s Climate and Health Playbook: Adaptation Planning for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with one another during Zoom breakout rooms to discuss and design further interventions. This webinar is free thanks to a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
