Project Description

Saving the Shtetlach

I plan to research of the resurgence of Jewish life in Europe in the post-Holocaust era. I’m studying how the past affects the present, how religion shapes identity, and how memory translates into history. Through interviews and visits to many small towns and European cities, my aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the full 1,000+ year history of Jewish life in Europe and investigate how this history affects young European-Jews and non-Jews today.

Mentor: Dr. Eric Sundquist, Department of English

Ms. Kaden’s memoir about her research is pending publication.
