Project Description

Digitizing the Ancient Past: The Use of International Collaboration to Reunite the Dunhuang Collections

The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) is an international collaboration aiming to digitize the manuscripts, cave paintings and archaeological material from Dunhuang and related Eastern Silk Road sites. Using this collaboration as a case study, this project aims to evaluate the use of an online database as a tool of “virtual reunification”, a strategy to reunite dispersed collections. To do this, I traveled to the IDP offices in Dunhuang, Beijing, London, Paris, and Berlin to learn more about the digitization process at each site as well as to learn more about their opinions on the future of this collaboration.
