Charles Dickens and International Literature in the Nineteenth Century
The dynamic energy of the Victorian period saw the emergence of literature as nuanced as the global market on which it appeared. I will investigate the diffusion of literary and print culture between Great Britain and America, Europe, and Russia during the nineteenth century with a focus on Charles Dickens’ career as popular author and active businessman. My research will explore patterns in translation, readership, and print mediums to illuminate the relationship between literary and market value in the mid- to late-1800s.
