Project Description

Desert Islands: Oaeses, Atolls, and Conceptions of Water Scarcity in Southern Arabia and the South Pacific

Low-lying islands in the South Pacific and desert oases in Southern Arabia are geographies defined by water. Heterogeneous in form, low-lying islands and desert oases are alike in their function; each serve as spheres for potential settlement, if fragile ones. Utilizing cultural material alongside environmental data, my research looks at the past, present, and future of interaction with water in these environments. How will anthropogenic climate change shape a narrative of water-determined migration and nomadism rooted in the archeological and historical past?
