The required courses for a major in sociology provide students with a fundamental understanding of sociological theory, methods, and social statistics.
Beyond these core requirements, elective courses are offered on a range of important sociological themes, including gender and family, social structure and personality, education, race and ethnicity, immigration, political sociology, international development, and the evolution of a world social system.

- 230.101 Introductory Sociology
- 230.202 Research Methods for the Social Sciences
- 230.205 Introduction to Social Statistics
- 230.213 Introduction to Social Theory
- At least one of the following:
- 230.322 Quantitative Research Practicum
- 230.323 Qualitative Research Practicum
- 230.325 Global Social Change & Development Practicum.
Note: Required courses must be taken as regular academic year courses (intersession courses cannot be counted toward major requirements) within the department. No substitutions are permitted (except in the cases of 230.101 & 230.205 as noted in Handbook).
- Six elective courses in the department, at least four must be non-introductory courses (at the 200 level or above).
- Three social science elective non-departmental courses carrying an “S” designation in at least two other departments or programs. These may be at any level.
- Eleven total courses must be taken in the Sociology Department (i.e. courses with a 230 department designation)
A grade of C or better is required in ALL courses.
Foreign language study is strongly encouraged for majors, especially those considering graduate or professional study.
