Culture creates perspective, and in turn, perspective influences the various ways in which we perceive our realities. It is accepted that different cultures hold different beliefs, but this project explores where these differences are rooted in the context of mental illness. The study provides insight into how culture impacts the patient experience through sharing the story of a young woman with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The results provide great insight into how cultures within the United States, Europe, and Asia understand OCD, exposing cross-cultural beliefs about the cause and treatment of the disorder, as well as attitudes towards individuals afflicted by it.
