My research explores how the strong ties between The Great Gatsby and American history influence the novel’s reputation among academics both abroad and in the United States. Moreover, through the study of Gatsby in particular, I analyze what influence politics has on scholars’ readiness to accept a work as part of the literary canon. I investigated these questions by conducting interviews about how the novel is taught with literary scholars from America, Britain, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
