My project explores the determinants of foreign policy in Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is currently undergoing an interesting and tumultuous political transition since a popular protest movement called the Orange Revolution reversed the results of a falsified presidential election. I’ve studied the history of foreign policy priorities in Ukraine, particularly as it pertains to Russia and the European Union. My thesis also charts the development of civil society in Ukraine, and its potential effect on foreign policy. In addition to interviews in the US, I traveled to Kiev and Odessa this past summer, where I conducted interviews with leading Ukrainian experts on these issues.
