Project Description

Founded in late 2009, the Charm City Clinic a 501(c)(3) non-profit health outreach partnership and screening clinic aims to increase access to quality, long-term health care among East Baltimore residents. From clinic records and extensive personal experience working in very low-income East Baltimore neighborhood, I have drawn together several case studies that trace specific difficulties that residents of this neighborhood contend with in managing their health and illnesses. And with preliminary outcomes from a neighborhood resident-driven outreach initiative at the clinic, I have attempted to document the role our clients themselves play in our work. The abiding goals of this project have been to illustrate how specific bureaucratic barriers to health care in Baltimore can be intensified by precarious household economies, and to point to specific ways in which neighborhood residents are important leaders in local urban health interventions.
