More Than Just A Game studies the power of the sport of football as beyond its universal scope as just an idle pastime; it highlights the role the sport plays in the social and economic development of whole communities around the world. With the help of the Woodrow Wilson Research Fellowship, I spent more than eight months in South Africa as the first program assistant to FIFA’s Football for Hope (FFH) initiative during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, directly applying the global appeal of the game to facilitate access for youth communities to public health and educational services. Establishing capacity development tools and working with over 20 community centers across Africa, the FFH team proved repeatedly that such activities are very promising means of advancing development at the grassroots level.
