For a family living below the poverty line, a medical emergency and its relevant costs can be the cause of even further descent into poverty. Micro health insurance schemes allows these families to access emergency care by paying an affordable premium. In the three cases I studied — an NGO-run scheme in Calcutta, India; a commercial scheme in Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and a governmental scheme in Wayanad, India — I found inconsistent healthcare accessibility but room for improvement.
