The archaeological major requires fieldwork of approximately one month, preferably an archaeological field school. Students should consult their faculty adviser regarding potential programs well ahead of their intended time of participation and will need to have the program approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) for Archaeology (currently Michael Harrower).

All students must enroll in AS.136.505 Independent Study – Archaeology Fieldwork for 1 credit (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) during the term in which the fieldwork is conducted. The Director of Undergraduate Studies should be selected as instructor and verification of fieldwork completion in the form of an email from the field project director needs to be sent to the DUS once fieldwork is complete.

For an additional 2 credits and a letter grade, the student may enroll in AS.136.506 Independent Study – Archaeology Fieldwork during the fall or spring semester immediately following fieldwork. The student will give a short presentation about the fieldwork at a meeting of majors and advisers and will prepare a paper on some aspect of the fieldwork research. This option applies to both field schools, and fieldwork experiences that are not part of field schools. Please note that apart from these credits (either 1 or 1+2), credits offered by field schools of other institutions will not be applicable to your archaeology major unless officially approved by the DUS.

Procedure for Fulfilling the Archaeology Fieldwork Requirement

  1. Student selects program in consultation with JHU archaeology faculty, obtaining approval from the faculty adviser and DUS.

  2. If fieldwork is to take place outside of the USA, the student needs to register with the JHU Global Education Office before enrolling in, or embarking on, any international travel.

  3. The student registers in AS.136.505 Independent Study – Archaeology Fieldwork for 1 credit (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) during the term in which the fieldwork is conducted with the DUS selected as instructor.

  4. Upon completion of fieldwork, the student requests that the field project director send an email to the DUS to confirm successful field project completion.

  5. Once the DUS assigns a grade of “S” for AS.136.505 the students degree audit will show that the fieldwork requirement has been completed.

    Additional Two Credit Option

If the student would like to pursue the additional 2 credit option, the student confers with a faculty sponsor and enrolls in AS.136.506 Independent Study – Archaeology Fieldwork (letter grade) during the fall or spring semester immediately following fieldwork (with the faculty sponsor selected as instructor). The student will give an oral presentation and write a research paper related to the fieldwork. The oral presentation will be given on a date determined by the faculty sponsor (September or October for fall term, February or March for spring term). The research paper is due by November 1 for fall term or April 1 for spring term. The research paper should be on a subject related to the fieldwork conducted and should be at least 10 double-spaced pages, plus bibliography and illustrations.
