JHU Sociology alumnus Jason Spicer discusses his award-winning book Co-operative Enterprise in Comparative Perspective: Exceptionally Un-American?<\/em> <\/strong>(OUP, 2024) and the broader research and practice agenda related to it. The book asks why democratically owned enterprises never scaled in the US as in other rich democracies, finding answers in the interacting legacies of economic liberalism and racial capitalism. But the story doesn’t end with institutional failure. Drawing on other research on community land trusts, worker ownership, tenant unions, and his direct involvement in drafting cooperative economics legislation in New York City, Spicer discusses a research agenda organized around moving between historical explanation and institutional construction. The talk asks what it means to apply sociology to not only explain why alternative economic institutions struggle in the US, but to help build them anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bio<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason Spicer is an Associate Professor at the City University of New York, jointly appointed at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College and in the Social Welfare PhD Program at the Graduate Center. An undergraduate alumnus of JHU, he holds a PhD from MIT. His research has been published in wide-ranging journals such as Socio-Economic Review<\/em>, Urban Affairs Review<\/em>, and Voluntas<\/em>, and he actively works with governments and community organizations to advance economic democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
