Professor Cindy Moss’s lab recently published research about bats’ ability to predict their prey’s path with echolocation. The research–with contributions from behavioral biology undergraduates Ike Enenemoh, Alexa Earls, and Dean Sheehan–was also picked up by CNN.

The paper shows that bats’ echolocation integrates acoustic snapshots over time to build prediction models of a moving auditory target’s trajectory, and enable prey capture under conditions of uncertainty. This work can inform future comparative work on auditory motion processing for animals and humans.
