Applications for these awards open in the spring and are due March 31.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chloe Center supports undergraduate research that falls into at least one of the four focus areas of the Critical Diaspora Studies major:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Migration and Borders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Global Indigeneities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empires, Wars, and Carceralities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solidarities, Social Movements, and Citizenship. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Research projects that consider the history and present of Johns Hopkins University and Baltimore in terms of racism, immigration, and colonialism are also welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are expected to offer a public presentation, in addition to a written summary, of their research in the fall semester following their summer research. Black Immigrants\u2019 Alternative Mental Health Healing Strategies: A Preliminary Ethnographic Case Study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vanessa Han (\u201926)<\/strong>: The Structural Undercurrents of Korean and Black Relations in Baltimore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ethan Tan (\u201925)<\/strong>: Organizing Chinese Community in Twentieth Century Baltimore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Angela Tracy (\u201925)<\/strong>: Filipino Diaspora: Unraveling Colonial Legacies and Military-Industrial Dynamics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rapid Research Grants [reopens in fall]<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate students are invited to apply for Critical Diaspora Studies Rapid Research Grants. These grants (up to $500) will support research, including travel outside Baltimore during the semester. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Critical Diaspora Studies course or cross-listed course <em>or <\/em>be engaged in writing a thesis or other project related to core themes of Critical Diaspora Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for a 2026\u20132027 Rapid Research Grant for travel to conduct research that will be completed by the end of spring break, send an application via e-mail to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:ricjhu@jhu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ricjhu@jhu.edu<\/a> by [tba; now closed]. Applications should include a one-page description of the research to be conducted, justifying necessary travel or other expenses, based on the research topic. Include a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 with the application and a brief estimated budget. A maximum of three grants will be awarded. Fall research grants may include research during intersession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025\u20132026 Rapid Research Grant awardees are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Valentina Giraldo (&#8217;26)<\/strong>: &#8220;From Conflict Zone to Contact Zone: Narratives of Tourism and Violence in&nbsp;Comuna13, Medell\u00edn&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vanessa Han (&#8217;26)<\/strong>: &#8220;The Structural Undercurrents of Korean and Black Relations in Baltimore&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cynthia Kigoye (&#8217;26)<\/strong>: &#8220;What Lies Between the Soil and the Seed: Intergenerational Trauma, Identity, and Mental Health in Second Generation African Youth&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spring 2025 Rapid Research Grant awardee is <strong>Acelyn McGowan (&#8217;27)<\/strong> for her research project &#8220;Revolution in the Rockies: How the Black Panther Party Shaped Student Activism in Colorado.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summer Research Awards Call for Applications [on hold, pending budgetary approval]<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chloe Center is seeking to support undergraduate research that falls into at least one of the four focus areas of the Critical Diaspora Studies major: Migration and Borders; Global Indigeneities; Empires, Wars, and Carceralities; Solidarities, Social Movements, and Citizenship.
