\u00a0The East Asian Studies Program congratulates Leyra Espino-Nardi on receiving the 2025 Excellence in East Asian Studies Award,<\/em>\u00a0which recognizes academic distinction and outstanding contribution to the JHU-East Asian Studies Program. Over the years, Leyra has been an active member\u00a0of the EAS community at JHU, inside and outside the classroom. Over the past year along, Leyra successfully led the publication of two issues of The East Asian Studies Forum and Review Journal showcasing the budding scholarship of undergraduates from JHU and other universities in the United States and East Asia; she participated\u00a0 and presented in the 76th Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) in the Social Movements and Human Behaviors Roundtable, and under the supervision Professor Francois Furstenberg, Leyra’s thesis When Rights Take Root investigates the passage of the 1970 Basic Act For Persons With Disabilities in Japan<\/em>, investigated policymaking in Japan vis a vis protected groups. Following graduation, Leyra will move to Japan.
