Over the years, Leyra has been an active member\u00a0of the EAS community at JHU, inside and outside the classroom. Over the past year along, Leyra successfully led the publication of two issues of The East Asian Studies Forum and Review Journal showcasing the budding scholarship of undergraduates from JHU and other universities in the United States and East Asia; she participated\u00a0 and presented in the 76th Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) in the Social Movements and Human Behaviors Roundtable, and under the supervision Professor Francois Furstenberg, Leyra&#8217;s thesis <em>When Rights Take Root investigates the passage of the 1970 Basic Act For Persons With Disabilities in Japan<\/em>, investigated policymaking in Japan vis a vis protected groups. Following graduation, Leyra will move to Japan.
