The film and media studies minor offers three tracks:
- The critical studies track emphasizes the academic study of film.
- The production track emphasizes film and media making.
- The screenwriting track emphasizes the craft of writing for film and tv.
Students must choose one of the designated tracks. Full requirements can be found on the online academic catalog.
Critical Studies Track
- Introductory film studies course (choose one): Introduction to Cinema I (061.140) Introduction to Cinema II (061.141)
- Introductory production course (choose one): Introduction to Digital Video Production: Visual Language (061.145) or Introduction to Film Production (061.150) or Introduction to Digital Video Production (061.152)
- One 200-level critical studies course (POS tag FILM-CRITST). Screenwriting courses cannot be applied for this requirement.
- Four 300- or 400-level critical studies courses (POS tag FILM-CRITST). A maximum of one class outside of Film and Media studies can count toward this requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to take one course focusing on cinema outside the United States. Screenwriting courses cannot be applied for this requirement. MI.061 classes cannot count toward this requirement.
Production Track
- Introductory film studies course (choose one): Introduction to Cinema I (061.140) or Introduction to Cinema II (061.141)
- One 200-level critical studies course (POS tag FILM-CRITST). Screenwriting courses cannot be applied for this requirement.
- Three 300- or 400-level critical studies courses (POS tag FILM-CRITST). A maximum of one class outside of Film and Media studies can count toward this requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to take one course focusing on cinema outside the United States. One screenwriting course can be applied to this requirement. MI.061 classes cannot count toward this requirement.
- Production courses:
- Introductory production course (choose one): Introduction to Digital Video Production: Visual Language (061.145), Introduction to Film Production (061.150) or Introduction to Digital Video Production (061.152)
- One intermediate film production course (061.2xx with POS tag FILM-PROD)
- Advanced Film Production (061.301), Narrative Productions (061.356), Lost and Found Film (061.413) or any 300-level film production course with POS tag FILM-PROD)
Screenwriting Track

- Select one (1) of the following hybrid courses: Visual Storytelling or Media and Narrative
- Two (2) 300- or 400-level critical studies film courses (POS tag FILM-CRITST). A maximum of one class outside of Film and Media studies can count toward this requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to take at least one course focusing on cinema outside the United States. Screenwriting courses cannot be applied for this requirement. MI.061 classes cannot count toward this requirement.
