Phil Solomon was a prolific American experimental filmmaker who collaborated with Stan Brakhage on several films, studied under Ken Jacobs and taught a generation of filmmakers at the famed University of Colorado Film School. Robert Schaller is a filmmaker, chemist, and founder of the Handmade Film Institute. His films are fundamentally concerned with two essential aspects of filmmaking: the materiality of the film medium itself, and the creation of “visual music” through applying the formal structures of music to filmmaking. Both artists share a deep commitment to the role of the material and expansion of the understanding of vision to encompass not just the eyes, but the whole being; the bodies and spirits that we are.
