Macksey Lecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Annual Richard A. Macksey Lecture draws esteemed scholars from across the humanities and humanistic social sciences, amplifying those teachers and researchers who are leaders at higher-learning institutions around the country and across the world. Invited Macksey Lecture speakers take to the podium to share insights about the state of their disciplinary field(s), the wider landscape of higher education, and the broad social and political moment in which they speak. Since then, we have organized successful and well-attended symposia on prison education and the carceral state, on translation, featuring theoretical lectures, readings, and discussion panels with practitioners, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Past Symposia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-516490\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">2025<\/h2><div id=\"ac-516490\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/philit.stanford.edu\/altered-sight-altered-minds\"><strong>Johns Hopkins\/Stanford Phil + Lit Graduate Student Conference 2025: Altered Sight, Altered Minds<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the 6th annual Philosophy &amp; Literature Graduate Student Conference, the Philosophy &amp; Literature Workshop at Stanford and the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute at Johns Hopkins University brought together doctoral students and scholars who worked at the intersection of philosophy, literature, the arts, and media studies to interrogate theories of consciousness, perception, and what it meant to \u201csee\u201d beyond the visual paradigm of experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 conference invited participants to consider how the representation of atypical conscious experience in literature and the arts\u2014such as mystical visions, dreams, madness, and psychedelia\u2014could shed light on a range of philosophical issues. Co-sponsored by the Departments of Comparative Thought and Literature, Philosophy, and Modern Languages and Literatures<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, leading voices convened for AGHI\u2019s Calley Symposium to discuss the theme of \u201cThe New Politics of Existence,\u201d exploring how existentialist thought from Kierkegaard to Heidegger to de Beauvoir and Sartre emphasizes the precarity and vulnerability of existence, as well as its freedom and responsibility. The Calley Symposium\u2014given today\u2019s world of impending climate catastrophe, misogynist and racist retrenchment, and nationalist resurgence\u2014foregrounded the philosophical inquiry into the nature of human existence which has gained renewed urgency. Featuring Johns Hopkins faculty as well as speakers from other campuses, the \u201cYearly Conversation\u201d aims to get humanists across ranks and fields around the same proverbial (and often literal) table.
