Provocative, insightful, unfiltered. For almost 200 years, Black photographers have\u00a0intentionally\u00a0documented\u00a0Black communities. They have used their cameras and creativity to portray Black people\u00a0\u201cas they see them\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0redress the racialized\u00a0narratives\u00a0which are common in popular media. In Baltimore, Maryland,\u00a0Black\u00a0photographers have played a critical role in representing lives too seldom celebrated\u00a0and too often forgotten.\u00a0With their images featured in spaces ranging from family photo\u00a0albums to national publications, these artists embody a tradition of\u00a0witnessing and\u00a0storytelling from a\u00a0Black point of view.<\/p>\n
Bearing Witness: Photographing Black Families in Baltimore<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0highlights the work of six\u00a0local Black photographers\u00a0who\u00a0explore historical and contemporary depictions of Black family life. It features\u00a0a mix of\u00a0established and emerging artists\u2014\u200bDaisy Brown, John Clark Mayden, I. Henry Phillips,\u00a0Sr., I.H. Webster\u00a0Phillips, III, Brian Pinson, and SHAN Wallace\u2014whose images of Black\u00a0Baltimore from the 1950s to the present display how Black folk live, love, struggle, and\u00a0triumph in their everyday lives.<\/p>\n
