ISLC Summer Speaker Series: Racism and Mass Incarceration in the U.S.

The ISLC and the Department of Political Science held a virtual discussion on Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th and the article “Political Consequences of the Carceral State” by Professor Vesla Weaver of Johns Hopkins University and Professor Amy Lerman of UC Berkeley. The discussion began with introductory remarks by Professors Adam Sheingate and Robert Lieberman of the Department of Political Science, who then answered questions posed by the audience about the documentary, the article and their remarks. A very productive and thought-provoking discussion ended on a hopeful note about reforms to the American system that would ensure more equitable systemic treatment for all Americans.
