The Jewish Studies Program presents a lecture by Dr. Nan Goodman in Gilman 17 on 10/21 at 12:30.

This talk argues that we cannot fully understand the radical nature of Louis Brandeis’s privacy argument–in particular his focus on the “intense emotional life” and “man’s spiritual nature,” in his celebrated law review article, “The Right to Privacy”—without taking his Frankist ancestry and his mother’s Sabbatian memory into account. Reading his article alongside his mother’s memoir of her Frankist relatives in Prague, I argue further, reshapes our understanding of two significant areas of inquiry: the provenance of the celebrated article, a subject of some debate in scholarly circles, and the relationship between Brandeis’s Jewish identity and privacy law.
