Students who entered Johns Hopkins University in a previous academic year should refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/e-catalogue.jhu.edu\/archive\/\">catalog of that academic year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students interested in pairing French with another romance language or languages should consult the separate guidelines for the <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/modern-languages-literatures\/romance-languages-major\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"191\">romance languages major<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions about the French major or minor can be directed to the French director of undergraduate studies,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:erusso@jhu.edu\">Professor Elena Russo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French Major Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Requirements for the major in French consist of successful completion of 10 courses (30 credits) beyond the Intermediate level (210.201\u2013202). These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two semesters of Advanced French (210.301 Advanced French for Writing; 210.302 Advanced French for Speaking); or equivalent placement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two semesters of Introduction to French Literature (212.333; 212.334)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La France Contemporaine (212.353)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eloquent French&nbsp;(210.417)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least four electives; of these\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A minimum of two courses must be taken under the 212 prefix, of which at least one must be at the 400 level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One course may be an upper-level offering in French language (210.3xx\/4xx)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One may be a French course taught in English (211 prefix)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Electives should be chosen with the approval of the director of undergraduate studies and of the student\u2019s faculty adviser from the French section so as to form a coherent intellectual concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honors in French<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and above are encouraged to complete the honors thesis in French. The year-long, four-credit thesis is prepared under the close direction of a faculty mentor. The first semester is devoted to research and the preparation of an abstract, bibliography, and outline (212.429 Thesis Prep, 1 credit). During the second semester&nbsp; (212.430 Senior Thesis, 3 credits), the student composes a 30- to 40-page paper in French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French Minor Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Requirements for the minor in French consist of successful completion of seven courses (21 credits) beyond the Intermediate level (210.201\u2013202), including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two semesters of Advanced French (210.301 Advanced French for Writing; 210.302 Advanced French for Speaking); or equivalent placement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One semester of Introduction to French Literature (either 212.333 or 212.334)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La France Contemporaine (212.353)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eloquent French&nbsp;(210.417)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One upper-level (300\/400) elective taken under the 210 or 212 prefix<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One upper level (300\/400) elective taken under the 212 prefix<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French program at Johns Hopkins offers a major and minor in French.
