{"id":9783,"date":"2024-06-29T14:39:50","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T18:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/modern-languages-literatures\/?p=9783"},"modified":"2024-06-30T12:39:55","modified_gmt":"2024-06-30T16:39:55","slug":"german-phd-candidates-receive-fulbright-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/modern-languages-literatures\/2024\/06\/29\/german-phd-candidates-receive-fulbright-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"German PhD candidates Gray and Harmon receive Fulbright Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>PhD candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/modern-languages-literatures\/german\/graduate-students\/\">Glen Gray<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/modern-languages-literatures\/german\/graduate-students\/\">Brad Harmon<\/a> each received a Fulbright Grant to Germany for the 2024\u20132025 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based at the University of Hamburg, Glen will be working on a research project entitled \u201cPolitics and Aesthetics of Despotism in Opera and German Drama.\u201d This will constitute the foundation for his dissertation on the influence of Italian poet Pietro Metastasio (1698\u20131782) on the development of 18<sup>th<\/sup>-C. German opera and dramatic literature, with emphasis on Fredrick II\u2019s court in Berlin, the operas of Mozart, and the dramas of Friedrich Schiller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In residence at the FU in Berlin, Brad will conduct research for several chapters of his dissertation, titled &#8220;Flesh of the World: Corporeal Ecopoetics in German &amp; Nordic Modernism.&#8221; These chapters focus on Paul Celan&#8217;s anatomical poetics, elemental envelopment in Nelly Sachs&#8217; poetry, and atmospheric anxiety in Inger Christensen&#8217;s writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PhD candidates Glen Gray and Brad Harmon each received a Fulbright Grant to Germany for the 2024\u20132025 academic year.
