The Authority of Ruins

Location: Online
Dates: Spring 2010

In the spring of 2010, seven Johns Hopkins undergraduates in a course offered by Hérica Valladares (Classics) worked with faculty and university staff to explore antiquarian publications dating between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Entitled The Authority of Ruins: Antiquarianism in Italy, 1500s–1800s, the final project for the course was the creation of an online exhibition. The site focuses on the visual nature of the study of antiquity, and investigates important changes in the methods for analyzing and depicting ruins over a span of 300 years.
