Each year, the Public Health Studies Program recognizes a faculty member, nominated by students, for outstanding teaching in public health. This year, PHS is proud to recognize Peter Winch, MD, MPH, a long-time faculty and friend of the PHS Program, whose commitment to our undergraduate students and to our program is unparalleled.

Beloved by many PHS students, Dr. Winch consistently receives positive reviews for his Global Health Principles and Practices course and is often sought as a mentor for research projects outside of class. This year, he began teaching the PHS Honors course and enthusiastically embraced the role, going above and beyond to support each student in their efforts to secure and conduct an independent research project.

For the PHS Golden Apple Award, Dr. Winch’s student nomination letter read, in part, “Peter genuinely cares about his students’ growth. He structures the honors class around pushing students to excel but takes into mind context. He puts in the effort to develop our skills both as researchers and leaders with the hope that we will create a better tomorrow.”

Additionally, students from his Global Health Principles and Practices class describe him as an amazing and inspirational instructor. For example, “He put passion behind the course’s material and made me interested in international health” and his class had “thought-provoking discussions and very interesting case studies that opened my eyes to more issues in public health.”

Dr. Winch was presented with the Golden Apple Award on May 24, 2023 at our PHS graduation reception. That very same day, Dr. Winch was also recognized by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with the 2023 Ernest Lyman Stebbins Medal for his “extraordinary contributions to the educational programs of the School.”

Congratulations Peter! Thanks for being such a positive part of our program and the undergraduate experience as a whole!
