{"id":9835,"date":"2026-06-01T13:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T17:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/publichealth\/?p=9835"},"modified":"2026-06-02T11:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T15:40:11","slug":"public-health-studies-in-costa-rica-january-intersession-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/publichealth\/2026\/06\/01\/public-health-studies-in-costa-rica-january-intersession-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Health Studies in Costa Rica: January Intersession Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In it\u2019s second year, the Public Health Studies Costa Rica\u00a0Study Abroad Program\u00a0took 14 students on a\u00a010-day trip during January Intersession 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After participating in a prep-course\u00a0in the fall, students traveled to Southern, rural Costa Rica with two\u00a0PHS staff members, Keri Frisch and Cara McNamara.\u00a0Daily field excursions and classroom workshops were facilitated by\u00a0in-country partners Centro Interamericano para La Salud Global (CISG) and Child and Family Health International. The group visited\u00a0a primary care clinic, the border with Panama, a coffee farm, an indigenous community, as well as\u00a0a national park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through\u00a0this immersive experience,\u00a0students had the opportunity to learn about health and health system issues, including migrant\u00a0health and planetary health, from the perspective of Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studyabroad.jhu.edu\/2026\/04\/chisom-ezuma-ngwu-hopkins-intersession-costa-rica\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/studyabroad.jhu.edu\/2026\/04\/chisom-ezuma-ngwu-hopkins-intersession-costa-rica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As student Chisom Ezuma-Ngwu\u00a0explained<\/a>, the program &#8220;challenged [her] to rethink how health systems are created, sustained, and experienced by the people they are meant to serve&#8221;\u00a0 and how she envisions her future &#8220;at the intersection of clinical medicine, community engagement, and public health research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 wp-block-gallery-1
