Directed by James Glossman

Brecht’s rabble-rousing masterpiece Galileo — written during WWII while the author was a political refugee in California, having fled Nazi Germany just ahead of an arrest warrant — is the bold, large-cast, epic tale of a scientific revolutionary, a flawed and stubborn hero who changed the world forever, before being silenced by the heavy hand of the Inquisition.

This fast-moving, funny, terrifying, and deeply humane adventure celebrates Freedom of Thought, Unexpected Chances, and the Scientific Revolution that emerged from Galileo’s telescope.

JHU Theatre is collaborating with the Space Telescope Science Institute – home to the Hubble and Webb telescopes – to connect what Galileo saw then to what we are almost miraculously able to see today, thanks to the cascade of discoveries of which Galileo was an early, struggling, visionary ancestor. Our production will be full of projected images from Hubble and Webb, as all around the actors we project beautiful and inspiring visions of black holes, nebulae, and exoplanets.

This sweeping story of daring and dashing in the face of oppression — full of Brecht’s iconic theatricality, comic verve, thrilling victory and unspeakable loss — is also chock-full of LOTS OF GREAT ROLES: heroes and villains, peasants and physicists, Romance, Repression, and a Pope who started out as a scientist.

The Playshop is a home for student-run theatre and experimental performance at the John Astin Theatre. The extent of the training will depend on the complexity of the project, and the Technical Director’s experience.
