Humanities Collaboratory Visiting Faculty Outreach

We are thrilled to launch the Humanities Collaboratory Faculty Outreach Program. This program is for visiting faculty and/or director-level staff from any colleges and universities nationally. Each faculty/staff member can submit an application where they will nominate one graduate student from their institution to travel with them to Johns Hopkins for this residential and fully immersed training program. Your two-person team will gain hands-on training in the new pedagogical model for humanities summer research, observe the Humanities Collaboratory, participate in webinars and info sessions both pre- and post-program, and have hands-on support from post-Collaboratory mentoring to program design as you launch similar programs at your institutions.

The Humanities Collaboratory

The JHU Humanities Collaboratory student cohort is built from a nationally-competitive application review of exceptionally talented emerging Humanities scholars. Community Colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) across the country recruit students to participate in this intensive and innovative summer research experience through the “Humanities For All Program” and the Leadership Alliance First Year Research Experience (FYRE). This program is explicitly oriented toward increasing access to high-impact learning practices to historically excluded students, including first-generation and low-income students, and building sustainable partnerships across universities and colleges. 

Faculty Outreach Experience

Training during the first three weeks will allow you to see the most fundamental reorganization of humanities research taking place. This includes student-centered idea generation without a central text, the live modeling of initial humanities inquiry that that we center in the Collaboratory, and the development of a preliminary thesis or hypothesis that drives students’ independent readings for the summer to make them entirely research-driven as opposed to report- driven.

Unlike a typical instructor training program, the faculty and graduate students taking part in the Faculty Outreach Program will be learning new methods in an active classroom from diverse student participants and Hopkins instructors. Given the extensive and collaborative research development central to our model, Faculty Outreach Program participants will also become an active part of the Collaboratory, working and modeling for the students themselves.

Then, when you return at the end of the summer, you will witness these students being trained in our methods for dissemination of humanities research. This includes exposing students to innovative public speaking techniques culminating in ten-minute oral presentations open to the entire Hopkins campus, the Community College of Baltimore County, and new Community College, HBCU, MSI, and HSI partners.

Stipends, housing, and transportation will be provided. 

Ongoing Support

Following completion of the Faculty Outreach Program, we will support Outreach Program alum as they work to incorporate Collaboratory-style classes and programs at their own institution. These may take a form very similar to the Hopkins model as a ten-week summer program for visiting community college students, but they could also be adapted to the normal academic year, shorter summer programs, and/or to students of the hosting institution. We will consult with the Outreach Program Participants through regular videoconferencing, email, and annual in-person visits to their campuses where appropriate.


  • Faculty/staff stipends will be $10,000 for 2022. Accompanying Graduate Students will receive $4,000.
  • Housing will be provided in a historic 9,000 square foot Victorian mansion in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore close to downtown, where faculty/staff and graduate students will share common space.
    • Faculty/staff will have private bedrooms. Graduate students will have shared rooms.
    • Bathrooms are numerous (12 shared bathrooms for 12 participants).
    • The shared housing has spacious kitchen accommodations. The home has all modern amenities. 
  • Stipends may be treated as taxable income. Some meals will be provided during events, but the majority of meals must be purchased by participants.
