The Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium<\/strong> brings together students across all fields of the humanities to present their work to a national audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 Macksey Symposium will be held from March 19-21, 2026<\/strong>, on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus in Baltimore. Submissions will be accepted from September 2 through December 1, 2025. Please see the application guidelines on the Apply page<\/a>. Information about the conference schedule, registration fees, transportation and lodging, and keynote speaker will be shared on the Attendance Information page<\/a> as it becomes available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All participants have the opportunity to submit their work to our peer-reviewed journal of conference proceedings, the Macksey Journal<\/em>. The journal is online and open access, and spans from 2020 to present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our peer-reviewed journal of proceedings, the Macksey Journal<\/em>, provides an opportunity for symposium participants to develop their presentations into articles for publication. Following the annual symposium, our managing editor and peer reviewers work with the presenters to develop their presentations into journal-length articles. Like the national symposium itself, this is the first undergraduate journal of its kind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All volumes of the Macksey Journal are online and open access at mackseyjournal.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Richard Macksey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Richard A. Macksey, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Comparative Thought and Literature<\/a>, was a legend in his own fields of critical theory, comparative literature, and film studies and a leader in the humanities overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An award-winning teacher, Macksey co-founded the Johns Hopkins Humanities Center in 1966 as a meeting ground and incubator for problems, ideas, and discussions across disciplines. He read and wrote in six languages, and maintained a celebrated library of more than 70,000 books and manuscripts in his home. This collection covers every genre in just about every language, and includes rare books, first editions, and association copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After beginning his undergraduate studies at Princeton, he transferred to Hopkins and earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in 1953 and master\u2019s degree in 1954, both in Writing Seminars<\/a>. He went on to earn a doctorate in comparative literature from Hopkins in 1957, and joined the Hopkins faculty in 1958. He served as Humanities Center director from 1970 until 1982 and was a professor on its faculty until his retirement in 2010. He also held joint appointments in Writing Seminars and in the School of Medicine\u2019s History of Medicine department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macksey, who penned or edited dozens of volumes of scholarly works, fiction, poetry, and translation, is renowned as one of the conveners of the groundbreaking international symposium called \u201cThe Languages of Criticism and the Sciences of Man,\u201d held at Hopkins in 1966. It was the first time that many leading figures of European structuralist criticism\u2014including Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Roland Barthes, and Paul de Man\u2014presented their ideas to the American academic community, placing Hopkins at the center of intellectual conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macksey received Hopkins\u2019 George E. Owen Teaching Award in 1992, the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999, and the Hopkins Heritage Award in 2010. In 1999, the Richard A. Macksey Professorship for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities was established, endowed by Edward T. Dangel III \u201964 and his wife, Bonni Widdoes. Macksey was the longtime comparative literature editor of Modern Language Notes <\/em>published by Johns Hopkins University Press, and a Richard A. Macksey Graduate Student Fellowship helped run the Honors Program in the Humanities for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
