{"id":3023,"date":"2023-07-13T09:13:58","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T13:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/ursca\/?page_id=3023"},"modified":"2024-11-06T12:23:13","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T17:23:13","slug":"apply","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/ursca\/macksey-symposium\/apply\/","title":{"rendered":"Apply"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium, inaugurated in 2020, is an annual symposium hosted by Johns Hopkins University to provide a national platform for undergraduates in the humanities to share their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johns Hopkins University&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhunewsletter.com\/article\/2016\/10\/the-origins-of-the-hopkins-humanities-center\">has long been a hub of humanities research and innovation<\/a>. We are proud to welcome students from across the country to become a part of this rich history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 Macksey Symposium will be held from <strong>March 20-22, 2025<\/strong>, on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We welcome submissions of humanities-based research from undergraduates currently enrolled at any two- or four-year college or university. To apply, submit an <a href=\"#abstract\">abstract<\/a> of your presentation to the application portal by <strong>December 9, 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conference presentations will be a maximum of ten minutes long and may consist of reading a paper (approximately 1,200-1,500 words) and\/or presenting a slide deck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research subjects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Classics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History of Art&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History of Science, Technology, or Medicine\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modern Languages and Literatures (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, etc.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Media Studies&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Philosophy&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religious Studies&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humanities topics within interdisciplinary fields (e.g., East Asian Studies, American Studies, Gender Studies, etc.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The application portal will be open from September 16 through December 9, 2024. Submissions are due by 11:59 pm on Monday, <strong>December 9, 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/johnshopkins.smapply.io\/prog\/macksey_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apply to the Macksey Symposium<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Notification of acceptance will be made on January 2, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"abstract\">Abstract-writing tips&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the abstract is to give the symposium organizers a clear and concise understanding of your project, so that they can judge whether your presentation is a good fit for the conference and, if so, how you should be grouped with other presenters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the brief guide below indicates, there is a general pattern that is often very effective for establishing why your audience should care about your paper. First, you establish what the conventional wisdom is about your subject\u2014what <em>they<\/em> say\u2014and then you contrast it with what <em>you<\/em> say that moves the field forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to cover<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with the current state of knowledge &#8212; what does the audience in the field know about your topic?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show that what you know is different, and demonstrate how this paper is going to change or expand our understanding of your topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your methodology &#8212; what\/how\/why &#8212; to show that the conclusions will be rigorous.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End with a hypothesis or conclusion, depending on the stage of your research, and what you expect to find\/demonstrate.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing an abstract can feel intimidating, but remember that the Macksey Symposium welcomes participants with little previous conference experience.
