Participants, selected each year from the first-year class of Krieger students, have the unparalleled opportunity to pursue an independent research project that spans their entire undergraduate career at Hopkins. Mentored by a Hopkins faculty member and supported by the URSCA staff as well as their more senior peers in the program, University Fellows develop as scholars, researchers, and communicators, at the same time that they learn to plan, manage, and execute a long-term project of their own design.

The University Fellowship is the largest research award available to Hopkins undergraduates — in both duration and funding. Each fellow receives up to $12,000 to cover research costs associated with their project, including materials, travel to research sites, and participation in conferences.

To become a University Fellow, students compose a three-year project proposal and budget, identify a faculty mentor, and submit a full application including transcripts, a CV, a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation. Applications are reviewed by a panel of JHU faculty from relevant disciplines, and finalists are invited to interview with URSCA staff, who ultimately name 10 University Fellows each year. Fellows may come from any department or program in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Our 10 new Fellows from the class of 2029, and the titles of their projects, are:

Vidhi Bansal, “Defining the Neuronal Membrane Proteasome: Peptide Repertoires, Receptor Logic, and Implications for Neural Signaling”

Juan Garcia, “Impact of Seasonal Diapause on Drosophila melanogaster Gut Microbiome Composition”

Siyeon Joo, “Characterizing Community-Driven Advocacy and Cumulative Impacts in Louisiana’s Petrochemical Corridor”

Yekyeong Lee, “Mapping neural mechanisms underlying sexually dimorphic features of sleep in Drosophila”

Bryce Leiberman, “Trapped in the Manosphere: Examining Gender Polarization in Young White Men”

Lazina Miah, “Muktir Gaan and the Memory of 1971: Visualizing the Liberation War in Bangladesh after 2024”

Nathan Nguyen, “Novel Drug Combinations to Treat Functional Impairments after Traumatic Brain Injury”

Emiya Rendall-Jackson, “Synaptic Dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease: The Role of APOE4 and Cholesterol Metabolism on the Membrane Biophysics of Ultrafast Endocytosis”

Palak Sadana, “Unravelling Viral Control of Host Gene Expression Machinery in an Archaeal System”

Leah Zheng, “Understanding Post-COVID-19 Healthcare Access for Older Chinese Americans Living in Cities with Low Chinese American Populations”

Please join us in congratulating these 10 emerging researchers!

[1
110
post-5032","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-fellowships
["GET
