Goodman Award.

The Bander Family Fund Award is intended to encourage students to think creatively in defining a project that can be done only outside the classroom. The work may be independent research, a creative venture, or an internship directly related to a field of study. This year’s awardee is Deborah Chung ’28, a sophomore from Katy, Texas, who will produce a chapbook of poetry that bridges her interests in both STEM and the arts. Her poems will “integrate elements of molecular/cell/neurobiology, calculus, and medical terminology into their core structures as extended metaphors, themes, and constraints on poetic shape/structure while exploring topics such as memory, identity, and interpersonal relationships,” with the goal of “intertwining ‘professional’ scientific communication” with her “‘personal’ language of experiences, thoughts, and emotions.”

The Louis E. Goodman Award was created at Johns Hopkins University to foster the sensitivity of prospective doctors to ideas and matters beyond the realm of medicine. Specifically, it was designed to encourage pre-med students to pursue their interests in the arts and letters for personal enrichment. This year’s Louis E. Goodman Awardee is Raymond Liu ’27, a junior majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology, who will use the $5,000 grant to pursue a photography project in collaboration with members of Baltimore’s migrant communities. Raymond, a co-founder of the Baltimore Chinese Community Coalition and a volunteer with CASA Baltimore, will draw on his community connections and his skills in portrait photography to complete a two-prong project. First, he will host free professional headshot events for community members and then, with consent, will also document their immigrant experiences. Ultimately, he will weave together the images and narratives in a photo collage and article for submission to local media outlets with the aim of highlighting stories of resilience.

Deborah and Raymond’s projects are just two examples of the many ways that undergraduates can pursue creative activities with the funding and support of URSCA. Past winners of the Bander Family Fund Award and Louis E. Goodman Award have engaged in film, photography, painting, and creative writing for a variety of purposes and audiences, from publishing a science fiction novella to building a community website; studying art in Paris to composing poems to accompany a self-illustrated coloring book.

We look forward to seeing Deborah and Raymond’s process unfold over the next year, and to seeing the final results of their work when they present them at our 2027 symposium!

These students will spend the next year on a poetry chapbook and a community-engaged documentary photography project, respectively.

[1
109
post-5063","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-grants
["GET
