What began as a learning experience evolved into an opportunity to contribute to clinical research.

“Deciding I was ready to publish came gradually,” Harmanpreet explains. “I realized our research question was meaningful, and our data could contribute to clinical practice.”

Under the mentorship of her principal investigator, Dr. Manos Brilakis, Harmanpreet gained firsthand exposure to procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab. That experience inspired her to design a research project examining the impact of the proximal optimization technique (POT) on bifurcation lesions in contemporary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Her work addresses a research question in interventional cardiology: how to better manage complex coronary lesions. By leveraging large, multicenter, international registry data, the study evaluates a procedural technique with potential implications for improving patient outcomes.

The project gained recognition as it was accepted as a moderated poster presentation at the American College of Cardiology and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), with Harmanpreet as first author. The full manuscript is currently under review at the American Journal of Cardiology.

“Choosing the journal was a strategic decision to reach interventional cardiologists who could apply these findings,” Harmanpreet shared.

The path to publication, however, was far from easy.

“The submission process was far more detailed than I expected,” Harmanpreet says. “It involved multiple rounds of writing, refining figures, and aligning the manuscript with strict journal standards.”

Throughout the process, mentorship and collaboration played a critical role. Faculty mentors and peer reviewers challenged Harmanpreet to sharpen her arguments, think critically about her findings, and communicate complex concepts with clarity.

The writing process also pushed Harmanpreet beyond her technical background.

“There were moments of uncertainty,” she reflects, “but I learned that with consistent effort and strong mentorship, you can develop a depth of knowledge far beyond what you expect.”

Now, as a published author, Harmanpreet views the achievement as more than a line on her CV.

“Becoming a published author is meaningful not just as an accomplishment, but as a reflection of growth,” she says. “This experience strengthened my critical thinking, resilience, and ability to communicate science effectively.”

What began as a distant aspiration has become a defining step in Harmanpreet’s academic and professional journey; one that highlights the influence of summer research experience, mentorship, and persistence.

Harmanpreet’s moderated poster contribution, co-authored with Pedro Emanuel De Paula Carvalho, Michaella Alexandrou, Dimitrios Strepkos, Athanasios Rempakos, Ali Karagoz, II, Dmitrii Khelimskii, Mahmut Uluganyan, Korhan Soylu, Ufuk Yildirim, Eleni Kladou, Barkin Kültürsay, Oleg Krestianinov, Olga Mastrodemos, Noah N.
