What\u2019s different about all <a href=\"#writing-fa\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#writing-fa\">Writing &amp; Communication (FA1) courses across the disciplines<\/a> is that discussing, practicing, and reflecting on the writing process are integrated into the work of the course itself, from what you do in class to how you engage with the course material.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krieger students fulfill these Writing &amp; Communication (FA1) requirements to earn the bachelor\u2019s degree:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reintroduction to Writing, as part of the First-Year Foundation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>6 Writing &amp; Communication credits in your major&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>9 additional Writing &amp; Communication credits (you\u2019ll find FA1 courses across the Krieger School; browse <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/writing-program\/curriculum\/undergraduate-courses\/\">advanced UWP courses<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reintro-writing\">Reintroduction to Writing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UWP curriculum begins with <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/writing-program\/curriculum\/reintroduction-to-writing\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3467\">Reintroduction to Writing<\/a>, which is required of all Krieger students and open to Whiting students as well. Reintroduction to Writing is a part of the Krieger School&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/krieger.jhu.edu\/academics\/first-year-foundation\/\">First-year Foundation<\/a> for all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced UWP courses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our advanced courses build on the work of Reintro: we continue to approach writing as an adaptable process of inquiry and action, as deeply informed by reading, and as reflective, embodied, and always emerging.&nbsp; We center these classes around different approaches to writing:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Genres&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing Methods&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place-Based Writing&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Special Topics in Writing&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community-Engaged Writing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"writing-fa\">Writing &amp; Communication (FA1) courses across the disciplines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find FA1 courses across Krieger departments and programs. To find out more about how they overlap with other Foundational Abilities, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/undergrad.krieger.jhu.edu\/\">undergraduate education page.<\/a> All Writing &amp; Communication (FA1) courses include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multiple substantial writing projects, ranging from traditional papers to a wide variety of other forms, distributed throughout the semester\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mix of high and low stakes writing, meaning that students have the chance write in informal, low-pressure \u2013 even ungraded \u2013 contexts, as well as producing larger, more formal assignments\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct engagement with writing in the classroom, including class discussions, workshop, faculty\/TA lectures, and class materials (for instance, strong and weak examples of the assigned genre)\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expectations that are conveyed clearly through assignment descriptions, including the genre and audience of the assigned writing, and evaluative criteria\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feedback to students on their writing, in written and\/or verbal form, from faculty, teaching assistants, and\/or peers\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least one opportunity to revise&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transferring Writing &amp; Communication (FA1) Credit&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have taken courses at other institutions and had them accepted at JHU for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/advising.jhu.edu\/transfer-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transfer credit<\/a>, you can request that they be considered for FA1 credit.
