The Johns Hopkins University offers the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in conjunction with six other university partners—University of Maryland Baltimore College (UMBC), Stevenson University, University of Baltimore (UB), Maryland Institute of College of Art (MICA), and University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB). The home unit is the Blue Jay Battalion. The JHU ROTC was among the first to be established by Congress in 1916 and is routinely ranked at the top of the nation’s programs. More than 3,000 students have received Army officer commissions through the program, with more than 40 attaining the rank of general officer.
ROTC basic classes are open to all students and focuses on developing leadership skills. Army ROTC is an elective curriculum taken along with required college classes. It is not a minor, but it gives you the tools, training, and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment— enhance your education and development of life-long skills with world-class leadership training.
Because Army ROTC is an elective, you can participate as a First Year and Sophomore student without any obligation to join the Army. You can also join with as little as two years remaining as an undergraduate, or while pursing a graduate degree. For those students who commit to ROTC their Junior and Senior years, you will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but when you graduate, you will be commissioned as an officer in the Army. At that point, you will have a wide range of interest areas you can specialize after graduation and serve your time in either the active duty Army, the Reserves, or the National Guard.
