Spanish Lecture Series

José Siale Djangany was the recipient of the 2021 Premio Internacional de Literaturas Africanas Justo Bolekia Boleká, for his book Misántropos de ébano y otros relatos (2021). He is an attorney and writer of Bubi and Ndowé ancestry, born in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea). After studying law in Paris, he returned to his home country to become a Supreme Court Magistrate. He now runs a private law office and dedicates the rest of his time to writing and scholarly production. Siale is a member of the Academia Ecuatoguineana de la Lengua Española, and the author of Cenizas de kalabó y termes (2000), La revuelta de los disfraces (2003), Autorretrato con un infiel (2007), En el lapso de una ternura (2011), 1915 y otros ecos de lluvia y de mar (2019), and Misántropos de ébano y otros relatos (2021), as well as the scholarly essays “Hilvanando derechos en la literatura colonial” (2014), “Ësáasi Eweera: en el laberinto del Estado dual” (2016), and “Que entre brujos y jueces no cunda el pánico” (2020).
