Catherine’s Value: Freedom, Excess, and Slavery on the Spanish Littoral

This essay excerpt explores the ways African women and women of African descent, living in slaveholding societies and in the immediate aftermath of emancipation, challenged the fundamental precepts of value, dis/ability, and gender as these ideas were being consolidated, and offered alternative visions of the body, care, and labor.
