The Program in Latin America, Caribbean and Latinx Studies is glad to present
Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, Director of the Department of Social Inclusion at the Organization of American States (OAS) for a talk on Mapping Scenarios: Responding to the Current Migration Patterns in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.´
In response to increasing intra-regional migration trends, and the significant displacement situations happening in the region recently, Latin American and Caribbean governments face the task of addressing evolving patterns of human mobility on a continent that hosts 16.3 million migrants. Notably, most migration has taken place among countries within the region, especially in South and Central America. This intraregional migration marks a rupture from previous years when the focus was mainly on individuals leaving, often with aspirations of reaching destinations like the United States, Canada, or Spain. While outward migration persists, and the US continues to be a desired country of destination, Latin America and the Caribbean have transformed into a vibrant hub for intraregional migration and, in certain instances, the return of migrants. What trends are we seeing in the region? What challenges do these human mobility patterns bring? How best to reconcile border security and the protection of the rights of these migrants and forcibly displaced populations?
Event co-sponsored by the Program in International Studies.
